The overarching tip to get attention on social media is to focus on iterative learnings about how to make a social media platform give you its free attention. From my experience I don’t often get it right the first few times I post on a new social platform. Instead, what I do is test different ways of posting content to find the sweet spot that fits these three buckets:
- What do I want to do that I like to do?
- What gets me the most attention on the platform
- What drives business results
The first point is about willingness and motivation. What will I enjoy doing repeatedly on social media? No matter the effect on 2 and 3, if I don’t enjoy it, or I can’t repeat it, I won’t take the same action repeatedly for a long enough period of time for it to matter. So, I have to like what I’m doing.
The second point is trying to get the most attention on a platform. What do I like to do that gets me the most attention on the platform.
Finally, what do I like to do that also pushes my business forward.
So, cycle through tests of different platforms, content types, messages, formats until I can post content repeatedly.
Finally, in December 2019 two social media platforms are giving away free attention: LinkedIn and Tik Tok. So, the tip is to focus on these two platforms.
